Introduction
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they (Heb. 1:1-4)
The word “Jesus” is not an ordinary name. It is a name that is given with a purpose. The name carries power and authority; the name is greater than any other name not only in this world but also in that which is to come (Eph.1:21).
The name JESUS is excellent because ALL things obey this name and above ALL names:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2: 8-11, emphasis mine)
The Name JESUS
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.( Matt 1:20-25, emphasis mine)
It is very clear from the above-quoted passages that the name JESUS carries meanings that cannot be found in any other name. JESUS means SAVIOUR: “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matt.1:21). No other name under the heaven that carries the power and authority to save apart from the name of JESUS. Acts of Apostles confirms this:
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4: 12)
The above passage speaks volumes of the name JESUS. This means that the name is the only key to salvation. In fact, the name is Salvation since JESUS Himself is a SAVIOUR.
Only God’s Name Can Save
There is no doubt the fact that JESUS is GOD (John 1:1, 3, 14; 20: 28; cf. Isa. 9:6; 1Cor. 8:6; 2Cor. 4:4; Col. 1; 15-16; 1 John 5:7). Thus, another name for God is Jesus:
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us (Matt.1:23).
According to this passage, the word “Emmanuel or Immanuel” means ‘God with us”. This means that the child that is born, JESUS, is God coming to stay with us with a different name. this had already been prophesied in the book of Isaiah :
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (Isaiah 7: 14)
And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel (Isaiah 8:8)
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6, emphasis mine)
With the above-quoted passages, it is crystal clear that only the name of JESUS is equal to salvation and has the capacity to save. Use the name today. When we shout the name of Jesus, we are calling on God. Let us say JESUS three times.
What The Name Can Do
The name of Jesus can do all things. We cannot discuss the name of JESUS in one fell swoop. The name can do anything one can think of. That is why He, Jesus Himself says in John 14: 13-14 that when we ask anything in His name He will do it – just anything! Ask today! The name is potent enough to do all things. The Acts of Apostles 4: 30 corroborates this:
By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus
The name can heal, save, deliver, cast out demons, build, destruct bad things, just mention anything, the name can do all. But the name can only be potent in the mouth of the righteous. All things, living and non-living things, visible and invisible things, obey the name JESUS:
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;(Phil. 2: 10)
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name (Luke 10:17)
JESUS is an excellent name. Use the name today.
